For countless pet owners, the heartbreak of losing a cherished companion ranks among life's most devastating moments.Yet an increasing number of people are now turning to artificial intelligence as a novel way to work through their sorrow.
A new wave of digital remembrance platforms is emerging—ranging from AI-crafted letters composed from a pet's imagined point of view,to interactive chatbots trained on uploaded photographs, recollections, and behavioral traits. These tools are designed to help owners preserve a sense of closeness with their animal long after it has passed away.

Certain services are built explicitly around bereavement support and memorialization.Platforms like Karyad, for instance, position themselves as dedicated resources for those mourning a pet, enabling users to generate ongoing"messages"or reflective notes from the departed animal based on stored memories.Another offering,ToThereOn,describes itself as a digital refuge for healing after pet loss, where individuals can curate stories, images, and conversational snippets in an immersive, interactive format.
This movement mirrors a wider cultural shift in how grief is handled in the internet age.At the same time,it has raised questions among mental health professionals about where genuine remembrance ends and simulated interaction begins.
Bethany Hsia,a veterinarian and co-founder of CodaPet,told*Newsweek*that the proliferation of AI grief tools did not catch her off guard.
"When families are navigating the final stages of a pet's life, there's frequently a noticeable gap in emotional backup,"Hsia observed."Veterinarians do get some preparation for having tough discussions with clients, but we aren't trained grief counselors."
She referred to this as a"missed handoff"that often occurs following a pet's death—when owners suddenly find themselves without the daily emotional scaffolding they had come to depend on throughout their animal's illness or final weeks.
"As a vet,I've witnessed just how profound that emptiness can be,"she added."A pet is usually a constant presence. When that familiar figure vanishes overnight, people are left with a silence they never anticipated."
In Hsia's view, many pet owners appear to be leveraging AI not as a stand-in for their lost animal, but rather as a bridge to ease the emotional transition.
Some applications dispatch messages inspired by a pet's unique temperament, while others generate digital avatars or conversational companions intended to spark fond recollections and offer reassurance.
"The way I've observed people using AI is often to render that silence a little less oppressive,"she said."For some,it's a method of honoring their pet and safeguarding memories, rather than letting them slip away over time."
Research indicates that sustaining a connection with a deceased pet—what some experts term a"continuing bond"—can serve a meaningful function in the grieving process.Photographs, physical mementos, written journals, and online tribute pages have all become widely accepted avenues for preserving ties with lost loved ones, whether human or animal.
A 2022 systematic review of pet-loss research, published in*OMEGA—Journal of Death and Dying*,found that such bonds can help certain owners cope and discover renewed purpose after a loss, although outcomes vary considerably depending on the individual and the nature of the connection maintained.
