According to recent findings,over half of the stray cats wandering New York City carry parasites that are transmissible to humans,with younger males shedding the largest quantities of parasitic eggs into surrounding areas.

**Widespread Contamination Detected**

Between May and July of 2023,researchers examined 87 feral felines captured via a Trap-Neuter-Return(TNR)initiative across the city.Through fecal flotation analysis,it was revealed that 57.5%of the animals harbored at least one variety of parasite.

The predominant organism identified was*Toxocara*,a type of roundworm present in 54%of the feline subjects.*Ancylostoma*,commonly referred to as hookworm,turned up in 13.8%of cases,while*coccidia*—a unicellular parasite—was observed in 11.5%of sampled strays.

Subsequent diagnostic assays uncovered additional pathogens.*Giardia*,another microscopic intestinal intruder,was detected in 11.6%of the tested group.Blood screenings further indicated that 8.9%carried antibodies against*Toxoplasma gondii*,a pathogen particularly dangerous for pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals.

None of the cats showed evidence of heartworm antigens or*Cytauxzoon felis*,a parasite transmitted via ticks.

In an interview with Newsweek,Dr.Ayesha Bryant,clinical advisor at Alpas Wellness in Maryland,offered her perspective on the implications.

"This investigation neatly illustrates the interconnectedness of animal,human,and environmental well-being—a concept often termed One Health,"she remarked."While detecting zoonotic parasites in over half of the sampled roaming cats doesn’t directly translate to a 50%infection rate in people,it does underscore the importance of minimizing exposure to contaminated dirt and fecal matter."

She emphasized,"Rather than fueling alarm,these results provide concrete backing for preventive approaches.It’s advisable for individuals to wash their hands thoroughly after engaging in outdoor activities,wear protective gloves when handling soil,keep sandboxes covered when idle,promptly clear yard areas of cat droppings,and ensure that pet cats receive consistent veterinary care and regular anti-parasitic treatments."
