And honestly,the pet effect kicks in way before anyone even meets up.About 65%of Gen Z and 55%of millennials admitted that seeing an adorable pet in someone's profile picture makes them way more likely to hit that like button.

Julie Nguyen,who works as a certified dating coach at Hily,put it pretty well:animals are naturally cute,so they show up everywhere in dating photos because of what they symbolize.Someone out hiking with their dog?That screams adventurous and outdoorsy.Someone curled up on the couch with a cat?That gives off cozy,emotionally warm vibes.

But here's the thing—those pet pics do double duty.They're not just attracting fellow animal lovers;they're also quietly weeding out people with allergies.More than a third of daters who have allergies said they've actually hesitated before liking someone's profile just because a pet was front and center in the photos.

‌When Allergies Get in the Way‌

For the roughly 16%of people in the survey who deal with pet allergies,dating gets complicated fast.Nguyen pointed out that this isn't just about sneezing fits or itchy eyes—it runs way deeper than that.

A pet allergy might seem like no big deal on the surface,but it can create this massive disconnect in how someone lives their day-to-day life,how the animal fits into the home,and what both people are willing to compromise on.If someone's allergy is bad enough that they literally can't be around their partner's pet,that means they can't fully show up in that person's world.And that's a pretty fundamental problem.

That kind of mismatch ends up touching everything—where you sleep,how you plan vacations,what your daily rhythm looks like.Nguyen mentioned that daters might start feeling like the other person's lifestyle is either way too chaotic or way too restrictive,depending on which side of the allergy fence they're on.
