Cats are as good as dogs at helping us beat stress

Researchers note that cats have long been neglected in university stress-relief initiatives across the U.S.,arguing they could play a significant role. While dogs dominate as therapy animals, recent findings indicate cats may effectively lower anxiety in highly sensitive individuals.Over 85%of"Pet Your Stress Away"campus events focus solely on dogs, yet a study in Anthrozoös journal proposes broader benefits by incorporating cats. This research uncovered a strong link between emotionality—a stable personality trait—and a greater inclination toward feline interaction.

Patricia Pendry,a co-author,stated:"Emotionality remains consistent over time, defining our character.Individuals scoring high on this scale showed markedly more enthusiasm for campus cat engagements."She added,"Since prior studies suggest such people bond deeply with animals,it's logical they'd advocate for cats in these programs.Common wisdom paints cat lovers as distinct from dog enthusiasts, implying student disinterest—but our data debunked this, revealing personality-driven appeal."

The project surveyed over 1,400 participants from 20+universities.Pendry,self-identifying as both a dog and cat person, remarked:"Dogs are seen as eager to please, whereas cats are often labeled unpredictable, distant,or fussy—traits that deter some.Yet,many attendees headed straight for cats, surprising me and sparking curiosity about their choices."

Concluding, she emphasized:"Including both species could expand outreach. Those high in emotionality might engage more and gain relief. We aim to diversify stress-reduction methods—adding cats is one strategy to widen impact."
