According to pet food brand Purina,a cat's fascination with boxes isn't just random—it's hardwired.Tight, enclosed spaces offer cats a feeling of safety and coziness, which explains why a simple cardboard box can easily become their favorite spot.

Back in 2014,a study at a Dutch animal shelter tracked 19 cats over two weeks.Half were given a hiding box,and the other half weren't.By the third and fourth days, the cats with boxes showed significantly lower stress levels, and their stress stayed consistently low across the group.Meanwhile, cats without boxes had a much wider range of stress reactions.

The research suggests that offering a hiding box helps cats adjust to shelter life more quickly, proving it's a simple yet powerful way to ease stress during those critical early weeks after arrival. The researchers also pointed out that more studies are needed to see how hiding boxes affect cats housed in groups, what the long-term benefits might be,and whether they could help lower disease outbreaks in shelters.
